Add Questions to your Survey

When you Create a Survey or Edit a Survey there are several survey question options available. Use the instructions below to add Survey Questions.

To Add Survey Questions:

Survey Questions are added one-by-one; with a number of options available that influence the type of responses you can collect.

The Question Type will dictate what fields are required to complete by you and this controls the type of response that your audience are able to give to your questions. There are five options:

  • One Answer Only (Radio Button): Respondents can choose one option from a list of answers pre-populated by you.
  • Multiple Answers (Checkbox): Respondents can select multiple options from a list of possible answers pre-populated by you.
  • Grid: Respondents can choose an answer from a grid. You will need to pre-populate row items and and answers to create the grid.
  • Open Answers (Text Entry): Respondents can type their answer into a small text area (maximum answer length of 255 characters) – ideal for when you want to gather short comments from employees.
  • Open Answers (Text Area Entry): Respondents can type their answer into a large text area (maximum answer length of 1000 characters) – perfect for when you want to gather detailed anecdotal feedback from employees.

 

One Answer Only (Radio Button)

The Radio Button allows respondents to choose one answer from a list you have populated. You must complete the Question labelQuestion Display and Answers fields as below.

Radio Button Fields Explained:

  • Layout: Choose to have your questions displayed horizontally or vertically.
  • Question Label: This label is only viewable within the Poppulo system, so give your question a label that you and your team will easily recognise when looking at reports etc.
  • Question Display: This is the question that your respondents will see when taking part in the survey.
  • Answers: Enter the answer options that you want your audience to select from. Note that answers must be one answer per line.
  • Add Other: If you wish to allow your audience to give an answer that’s not included in your pre-populated list, then checking this box allows them to enter their own unique answer.
  • Other Label: What will show up in reports, so choose something you’ll recognise.
  • Other Text: This is what will appear to your survey respondents.
  • ​Mandatory: Selecting this checkbox means that respondents will not be able to submit their survey responses until they have selected an answer for this question. Mandatory questions are displayed with a red asterisk beside them.

Multiple Answers (Checkbox)

The Checkbox allows respondents to choose one or more answers from a list you have pre-populated. You must complete the Question labelQuestion Display and Answers fields as below.

Grid

The grid allows your respondents to choose an answer based on a grid, for example, “How happy are you?” is the answer and the respondent will choose from a scale of 1-5 on the grid. You must complete the Question labelQuestion DisplayAnswers and Rows fields as below.

  • Rows: Enter the row item options that you want your audience to select from. Note that row items must be one answer per line.
  • ​Mandatory: Selecting this checkbox means that respondents will not be able to submit their survey responses until they have selected an answer for this question. Mandatory questions are displayed with a red asterisk beside them.

Open Answers (Text Entry/Text Area Entry)

The Text Entry/Text Area Entry allows the respondent to answer a question with text. The Text Entry option is a small text response while Text Area Entry allows for paragraph text. You must complete the Question label and Question Display fields as below.

  • Question Label: This label is only viewable within the Poppulo system, so give your question a label that you and your team will easily recognise when looking at reports etc.
  • Question Display: This is the question that your respondents will see when taking part in the survey.
  • ​Mandatory: Selecting this checkbox means that respondents will not be able to submit their survey responses until they have selected an answer for this question. Mandatory questions are displayed with a red asterisk beside them.

 

Add Additional Questions

At the end of each question you can click ‘Add Another Question’ to add addition questions to your survey. If you are adding multiple questions, you may want to Add a Page Break. This places questions on separate pages. Your respondents will be directed to a new page once they’ve answered the previous question. You can also click ‘Delete Question’ to delete that question.

Note: Questions can be expanded or collapsed using the [ + ] and [ – ] icons on the left beside the Question Name. You can also drag and drop your question using the cross icon on the right.
