The DMA UK has just released new research: Customer Acquisition Barometer 2014, for any marketers who are placing an emphasis this year on building an in-house database of leads, this will make for interesting reading.

Consumers say the best channels for getting the information they want is email and the brand’s own website. Consumers have the most confidence providing their personal information to receive information by email – it is by far the most preferred contact route.

Among marketers, these are also the most widely used channels for customer acquisition, with 40% naming email and 30% naming their website as the most effective in their acquisition activities.

So, when building your sign up form make sure it is in both your email marketing messages you send, as well as on your website.

According to the report, these are the types of information that will entice people to sign up to hear from you via your email marketing messages:

  1. Receiving the latest products and services
  2. Receiving the best deals
  3. Staying in touch (if you are a brand they like)
  4. Offering incentives
  5. Respecting their indicated interests and also their privacy and permissions that they have given for contact.
